Miller, B.M. (2013, February 1). Women of the Frontier: 16 Tales of Trailblazing Homesteaders, Entrepreneurs, and Rabble-Rousers.  Chicago, IL: Chicago Review Press.

The history and first-hand accounts of various women eking out a life on the prairie is well done.
Miller covers various environments and living situations of women, but I would have liked to see more diversity, such as Chinese immigrants and Mexicans. While the majority of the featured women are white, there is some diversity with an African-American and former slave's story of entrepreneurship and the political battles fought by Native American women included.

Reading level is for 8th-10th graders. Women of the Frontier would make a great text (either as a whole or with singular chapters) for a US history class or an English class for literary nonfiction looking for cross-curriculuar texts.

Bonus: There are lots of direct quotes with the sources cited via footnotes/bibliographies by chapter located at the back of the book.
